The is pleased to announce that Ricky S. Huard has been promoted to editor in chief.
Huard has extensive publishing experience and has worked at 91视频 since 2002. Before stepping into his new role, he held positions as manuscript editor and acquisitions editor at the 91视频 Press.
Huard earned a J.D. from the Colorado School of Law at the University of Colorado Boulder and a B.A. in linguistics at Yale University. Prior to coming to OHIO, he worked as an associate editor for the Harrison Co., a legal publisher in Athens, Georgia.
鈥淩icky has stepped up and provided acquisitions leadership during a period of staff transitions and reductions,鈥 said Beth Pratt, director of the 91视频 Press, a member of the . 鈥淗e is already a proven leader, and I am delighted to make official the good work he has been doing for several years.鈥
Huard asserts that book publishing involves dual processes.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a craftsman like occupation in that you make a thing that you can hold in your hand, yet the substance of that thing comes from the invisible thought of the author and the skill of the editors and designers,鈥 Huard said. "The trick is that while making the first part visible, the second part should remain invisible.鈥
鈥淭he publisher鈥檚 added value is in what you don鈥檛 see,鈥 Huard continues. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 see misspelled words. You don鈥檛 see bad line breaks. You don鈥檛 see blind references in a book鈥檚 index. If you notice that you鈥檙e reading, something is wrong. In scholarly publishing, you鈥檙e making a tool, and a good tool does its job without your thinking about it. It鈥檚 not making a text capable of clear reading, but rather rendering a text incapable of being misread.鈥
To achieve this result, Huard is willing to push authors beyond their comfort zones:
"I can give you the book you want, or I can give you the best book it can be," he said.
